Why Feldenkrais®?

"My story begins over 5 years ago when I noticed I was having difficulty walking long distances (I am 67 years old) and I had some pain in my back. Two years later, the pain got worse and my legs started cramping and getting numb. Finally I was referred to a back surgeon. After two back operations my pain level dropped. However, numbness in the feet and legs (like walking on pillows) made it difficult to walk properly and I fell a few times. I also still had the nagging pain in my back. I had already tried several ways to deal with that pain without lasting relief when I read an article in the paper about the Feldenkrais Method and joined Eve's class in Awareness through Movement. These gentle and misleadingly simple movements managed to loosen and awaken parts of the body as well as the mind, and have alleviated many of my aches and pains. I have now been coming to the weekly Feldenkrais class for about 4 months. I have been able to stop all pain medications prescribed by the doctor, since the pain in my back and feet is now negligible. The nerves to my feet are beginning to regenerate, and I can feel a lot more in my feet and legs than before. I am also not walking with a cane any more. The Feldenkrais Method does work for those who are willing to take the time and make the effort to help themselves. I enjoy the class a bunch because I learn something new each time. "I swim for exercise and for rehab and I've always counted the amount of strokes it takes for me to reach the other end of the pool. Usually it takes anywhere between 15-18 strokes. After taking my first Feldenkrais class, I went to the pool and swam across again counting my strokes. Lo and behold it was only 13 this time around. I was surprised to say the least and tried to think about what I had done differently. Swam back to the other side and noticed that I rolled to my right. I've always rolled to my left while taking a breath but never thought to roll to my right as well.
